KARST PHENOMENA: PODSTENICE SINKHOLE
Podstenice sinkhole or Podsteniška koliševka in Slovene is the largest sinkhole inKočevski rog. A sinkhole is a typical karst natural phenomena and is a depression or hole in the ground caused by some form of collapse of the surface layer. Podstenice sinkhole measures 160 meters in diameter, 60 meters in depth and has a volume of 665 cubic meters. At the bottom part of the sinkhole cold air lingers, which is a product of a temperature switch due to inflow of cold air from underground crack system.
Podstenice sinkhole is protected as a natural heritage site and also a woodland reserve, so visitors can look at it from the brink only.
WARNING: In Kočevski Rog, always stick to marked and maintained paths and forest roads! You can only enter the caves accompanied by experienced cavers, provided that you have all the necessary equipment and permits, unless it is a strictly protected area, where entry is not allowed at all. Tours are at your own risk. We advise you to always first inquire about the possibility of visiting with the Caving Association of Slovenia or the local caving association.
